Assalamu Alaykum,

Today we’re going through a gem from Mufti Aasim Rashid’s course about the history of Madina. In this gem, Mufti Saab shares why Muslims always go back to Madina.

We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

There's a Hadith mentioned in Bukhari and Muslim where the Prophet ﷺ says:

‏ ‏ إِنَّ الإِيمَانَ لَيَأْرِزُ إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ كَمَا تَأْرِزُ الْحَيَّةُ إِلَى جُحْرِهَا‏
Verily the faith would recede to Madina just as the serpent crawls back into its hole. (Sahih Muslim, 147)

Iman will coil up in Madina just like a snake coils up in its den.

The snake is long and has an extended body but then it coils up. There are many aspects to Islam and Iman, but it will accumulate and assimilate in Madina.

What does Iman mean here?

It could be the Muslims themselves. It could also be referring to the best practices of Muslims. There will be a time where if a person wants to find it, if they want to see Iman, they'll have to come to Madina and that's where they'll find it all.

So Iman comes back to Madina. And the people of Iman will always come back to Medina. And Muhaditheen have also mentioned that it will be a place of shelter for Iman and the Mu’mineen - the believers. They'll always find shelter there in Madina.

The reality is that everyone goes to Madina for that purpose. They go there to replenish their faith, to reconnect with Allah ﷻ and his Rasool ﷺ, to rekindle in their hearts that flame of Iman. And it has been like that since the time of the Prophet ﷺ, people have been going there for this purpose of reconnecting with the Prophet ﷺ at a much higher level.

In another narration the example of a flood was given. Just like how the flood water will accumulate in a lower ground, similarly, lman will accumulate in Madina. Just like water always finds its way, even if the slope is very very slight, it will always make its way down the slope and then it will accumulate in the lowest dip in the ground. Just like that, Iman will accumulate, it will find its way back into Madina.

May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to visit Madina.
