Assalamu Alaykum,

Today’s gem is from Imam Khalid Latif’s course, The Most Beautiful Names: Allah’s Al-Asmaa’ Al-Husna. In this gem Imam Khalid Latif what it means to be Allah’s ‘abd.

Hope you enjoy!

We begin in the Name of Allah , the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad

The idea is to first recognize that our foundational relationship with Allah is as ‘abd. I’m an ‘abd. You’re an ‘abd. And by definition, the word ‘abd is not just servant or slave of God because there’s nunace that gets lost.

You are an ‘abd by definition because you rely upon something to exist. You are not self-sufficient. The word ‘abd denotes that you rely on something to exist.

So everything in creation is ‘abd, becasue nothing exists on its own. Nothing is self sufficient in that sense. You can not exist simply without reilance upon something.

That is what it means to be ‘abd.

May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to be true ‘abds of Allah ﷻ.

أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
