Assalamu Alaykum,

Today we’re going through a gem from Mufti Abdul Wahab Waheed’s course called A Tour of Tales: From the Dream to the Throne, where he goes through the journey of Prophet Yusuf (AS). In this gem, Mufti Saab explains why we must be careful of the words we use in our duas.

Hope you enjoy!

We begin in the Name of Allah , the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad

Continuing on in the story, Prophet Yusuf (AS) is sent to jail. He doesn't necessarily get convicted, he is sent because of the circumstances. He actually says himself:

(Quran 12:33)

He says Oh Allah, prison is better for me than what they're calling me towards. I'd rather go to prison then deal with these types of challenges.

The Prophet ﷺ said Rahimullahu Yusuf, may Allah have mercy on Yusuf. It would have been better if he said, oh Allah I ask for and easy way out. Since he mentioned I'd rather go to prison, Allah sent him to prison.

We have to be very careful of our wordings in our duas. Especially for all the parents when we make dua for our children every word makes a difference.

The wording is:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ
O Allah, I ask You for forgiveness and well-being

Oh Allah, I ask for ease and comfort.  Make it easy for me.

The Prophet ﷺ saw a sahaba making dua for patience. He's making the dua: Ya Allah give me sabr (patience).

So the Prophet ﷺ says what do you need sabr from?

He said well nothing right now, but what if something happens? I want sabr.

The Prophet ﷺ says the fact that you're asking for sabr without anything happening to you is by extension asking for a difficulty.

Ask for Afiya, ask Allah for ease. Never ask for a difficulty. We don't ask for things that we can't manage and uphold.

May Allah grant us afiyah.

أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
