Assalamu Alaykum,
Today’s gem is from Ustadh Feraidoon Mojadedi’s course, From Mawlana to Rumi: A Journey to the Heart. In this gem, Ustadh Feraidoon Mojaded explains the reason why we’re able to let go and really learn when studying the islamic sciences.
Hope you enjoy!
We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
We have a tradition of trusting in our teachers.
We have this amazing process of passing down the tradition from heart to heart. You can ask anyone who is a student of knowledge who they are studying with and they will tell you I’m studying with so and so who studied with so and so all the way back to the Prophet ﷺ.
We have this in our tradition, it's called the unbroken chain (sanad) where you study with someone who has ijaza that studied with someone. For example, in the sciences of Quran, they go back to Ibn Mas’ud, in fiqh you go back to Abu Hanifa or Imam Shafi, etc.. In every science, you have these unbroken chains.
But why? Why do we keep that tradition?
So you let go when you study.
Because it's very difficult to study and constantly wonder if the information you’re getting from your teacher is the truth. Imagine trying to focus and while you’re in class you’re constantly thinking at the back of your mind, "Oh, is he right? Is he telling me the truth?"
But if you let go, and you take in information knowing that there is a chain that's going to go back to the source, then you're going to really learn.
May Allah grant us tawfiq to gain sacred knowledge.
أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
