Today’s gem is from Dr. Hatem Al-Haj’s course, Prophetic Parenting: Raising Children of Righteousness. In this gem, Dr. Hatem why its important to instill in children early on that the ultimate role model is the Prophet ﷺ.

We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Instill in your children a deep love for the Prophet ﷺ, encourage them to view him as their ultimate role model. You're not the ultimate role model. Make sure that they understand that very clearly. You shouldn’t even pretend to be an ultimate role model. Here’s why…

If you're making yourself the ultimate role model, then you're asking them to be a copy of you. And then when they become 11, 12, 13, and they want to have their own independent identity, they do not want to be a copy of anyone, including their mother or father.

But when you're pointing to the ultimate role model and the other role models that are even better than you - Abu Bakr (R), Umar (R), Uthman (R), Ali (R), all the sahaba. When you point to these role models that are higher than you, you're telling them that we are both on a journey. I'm ahead of you in this journey. I am your father, I'm taking your hand to follow those role models, not me. We're both on this journey of following the ultimate role model ﷺ.

When the Prophet ﷺ is the ultimate role model, you would want your child to be better than you. Because if you're the ultimate role model, then that may be a problem…

May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to instill a deep love for the Prophet ﷺ in our children.
