Assalamu Alaykum,

Today’s gem is from Mufti Abdul Wahab Waheed’s course, Conversations with Allah: Cultivating Dua. In this gem, Mufti saab shares how our perspective needs to shift when it comes to making dua.

Hope you enjoy!

We begin in the Name of Allah , the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad

A lot of people, myself included, consider dua to be a secondary thing in life. I have to pray Fard Salah, I have to fast, all those things are important. But when it comes to du'a, it's done in such a rush. It’s done without an actual plan. It's just whatever, man. I'll say a few words, and my du'a is done.

But if we look at our pious predecessors, and of course, the Prophet ﷺ himself and the Sahaba, Du’a was recognized as a great form of Ibadah. The Prophet ﷺ in one narration said:

‏الدعاء هو العبادة
Du'a (supplication) is worship (Abu Dawud)

That Dua in it of itself is Ibadah - making Dua is a form of worship.

So, du'a was not an afterthought or something that you do because it's connected to a prayer. It was an actual form of conversing and speaking to Allah ﷻ.

In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah ﷻ explains that if every single person were to gather in one plain land and at one time, ever single person turns towards Allah and they make du’a at the same exact time and Allah were to accept every single person’s du’a. He says answering every single person’s du’a does not take away from me except how a needle when its placed inside an ocean, when its removed that small drop that drips off the needle, that’s all that’s removed from my treasures.

So, making du'a to Allah ﷻ is not an afterthought but should be a primary focus, not only in Ramadan or during tough times, but throughout the year.

May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to make cultivate our relationship with Him.

أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
