Assalamu Alaykum,
Today’s gem is from Mufti Abdul Rahman Waheed’s course, Dominion: Tafsir of Surah Al-Mulk. In this gem Mufti Abdul Rahman shares a statement of Hasan Al-Basri on the power of pondering/reflection.
Hope you enjoy!
We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Hasan Al-Basri says that pondering over the creation of Allah ﷻ—like the skies, the Earth, the mountains, all these different things Allah ﷻ has given us around us, or even pondering over ourselves—leads us to goodness and acting upon good.
That’s one type of pondering, pondering over something that leads you to something good.
On the other hand, you also have another type of pondering which is called regret. This involves reflecting on our sins and the time we've lost. Its when you’re sitting in a corner regretting and thinking about the time you wasted in Ramadan or the time you could have spent better, or the sins you committed.
That regret, Hasan Al-Basri says, over time lost or sins, you know what it does? The more you sit and regret, slowly but surely it helps you leave the very thing that you regret.
May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to ponder.
أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
