Assalamu Alaykum,

Today’s gem is from Mufti Abdul Rahman’s course, Etiquettes of a Seeker. In this gem, Mufti Abdul Rahman shares why out of all the titles one could have, “student of knowledge” was the title that scholars most coveted.

We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

What's interesting about a title, you know how we always say, "Dr. Saab, engineer, he's a lawyer, he’s a mufti, etc." The most coveted title for the scholars was being a student of knowledge because being a Talibul ‘ilm (student of knowledge) means you have many different layers of the attention and mercy of Allah ﷻ directed to you.

When you have a certain title, now all the benefits of that title are for you.

I had a friend of mine who just graduated high school and he's a tennis player. He's from Rochester Hills, from a poor family. He's a really good tennis player, but he could never make it to the pros because he was too poor to get coaching and extra training. Now that he’s at the University of Toledo on the tennis team and is a “student athlete,” he's working hard to become a pro. He told me that the advantage of being a student athlete is that everything is free now.

The moment you become a student athlete - the moment you have that title - all the benefits, all the resources, all the luxuries of being a student athlete are directed towards you. Now you can walk into the gym and time you want. You can take advantage of all the health coordinators, all the athletes, all the exercise science that's there. Everything is for you. Now you have it at your table, you can dispose of it as you will. Before you had that title, you didn’t have that luxury.

Similar is a case of being a talibul ‘ilm, a student of knowledge. When a person is a student of knowledge, all those hadith, all those ayat of Quran that are directed towards the student of knowledge are now for that person.

So Allah ﷻ make us truly among those who are under the title of student of knowledge in the courts of Allah ﷻ because if we are, then the hadith of the fish making dua for us in the sea and every rock and every tree making dua for us as we pass by, those are for us.
