Assalamu Alaykum,
Today we’re going through a gem from Mufti Sultan Mohiuddin’s class on Umar (RA) on the difference in mindset between us and Umar (RA).
Hope you enjoy!
We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Aisha (RA) noticed that Umar (RA), amongst all of the sahaba, quantity wise had the largest tahajjud. He would pray the longest amount of hours in the night, despite the fact that he had the busiest of days.
What’s the lesson in this for you and I?
Many times when we say we don’t have time for the deen, most of the time it's because we have time for netflix.
We don’t have time for the deen because we have time for games.
We don’t have time for the deen because we do have lots of time to go out and eat and wait 45 minutes for our food instead of listening to a 45 minute halaqa.
So that’s the thing, for Umar (RA) none of these things that I mentioned in terms of entertainment served any purpose to him. He put his efforts towards what is going to benefit him. His approach was: I’m going to exert myself, even hurt myself if I have to, when it comes to Ibadah. A little pinch or discomfort when it comes to Ibadah is praiseworthy.
Ibadah isn’t always supposed to feel comfortable. Islam is not a feel-good thing where I only pray when I feel good about it. It’s supposed to pinch a little bit.
Umar (RA)’s mindset was, if I’m going to put my energy, effort, and actually feel pain towards something, then I’m going to put it where it should actually go (tahajjud).
May Allah grant us tawfiq to put our energy and effort into learning and implementing the deen.
أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
