Today’s gem is from Shaykh Hamzah Imtiaz’s Ramadan Immersion course, From Resurrection to the Final Abode: The Affairs of the Final Day. In this gem, Shaykh Hamza shares one opinion of why there are so many different names for the day of Judgement.

We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

There are about 62 different names referencing the Day of Judgment.

Why is that?

The scholars have differing opinions.

Imam al-Qurtubi said: “Anything that is great has many descriptions and names; this was part of the oral tradition of the Arabs. Consider how important the sword is to them, and how beneficial they would consider it to be in their lives. They have five hundred names for it! Because of how important the Day of Resurrection is, and how plentiful its terrors are, Allah, the Exalted, called it by many names in His scripture, and mentioned many descriptions for it.”

Another wisdom behind the different names is that each name denotes a different aspect of the Day of Judgement. It calls for our attention and reflection of the inevitable.

Each of these different names will speak to us differently. Learning them will help us prepare for the Final Day.
