Assalamu Alaykum,

Today we’re going through a gem from Ustadh Ubaydullah Evans’ Course, The Bridegroom’s Crown: Remembrance & Repentance. This gem is about living a life of reflection.

We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Ibn Ata'illah says if you want to be a person of repentance, then don't allow your life to be devoid of reflection for even a single moment.

The Prophet ﷺ would often seek refuge in Allah ﷻ from being among the Ghafileen, the people that are heedless. The Prophet ﷺ said in a Hadith that there are these Divine breezes of mercy, expose yourself to these Divine breezes of mercy.

And the reason that is significant in the context of ghafla is that all of us have access to these Divine breezes of mercy, all of us has have access to those special times of dua.

Before maghrib.

After asr.

After Fajr.

Qiyam ul layl, witr, tahajjud.

All of us have access to these special times of acceptance.

It's just that some of us have been given that tawfiq, some of us have been given that Divine facilitation so that we can realize the blessedness of those things and others don't know anything about them. Others don't realize the opportunities that they're squandering.

And that's why it's not simply about information or knowledge per se, it's about tawfiq. It's about Allah ﷻ giving you the ability to act upon what you know.

And this is why one of the best definitions of a true woman or a true man of spiritual knowledge and insight is someone who acts according to what they know so that Allah ﷻ teaches them that which they don't know.

So here ibn Ata'illah says if you want to be a person of repentance, don't allow your life to be devoid of reflection. Don't allow your existence to go unexamined.

Think very deeply about what you do during the day.

May Allah grant us tawfiq to live a life of reflection.

أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
