Assalamu Alaykum,

Today’s gem is from Shaykh Navaid Aziz’s course, What Really Matters: Select Hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ on Zuhd. In this gem, Shaykh Navaid explains what Zuhd is and shares Imam Nawawi’s advice for giving condolences.

Hope you enjoy!

We begin in the Name of Allah , the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad

This is where the topic Zuhd actually comes in, it is to leave the Dunya without feeling any takaluf - without feeling any form of burden. So when you keep that in mind, you want to reach the state that if you have to sacrifice something for the sake of Allah ﷻ, you're willingly, happily doing so because you know that this thing belongs to Allah ﷻ in the first place. That Allah ﷻ only took back that which belonged to Him.

And this is why Imam Nawawi says when you're consoling someone, one of the best ways of consoling someone is to remind them:

إن لله ما أخذ، وله ما أعطى
Indeed to Allah ﷻ belongs that which He gave, and that which He took.

All of this is Allah ﷻ’s, right? We have to be careful not to make the mistake of becoming over attached to the gift. You want to attach your heart to The Giver ﷻ, not the gift. And that’s what Zuhd is all about.

May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to attach our hearts to Him.

أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
