Assalamu Alaykum,
Today’s gem is from Mufti Abdul Wahab Waheed’s class, Tour of Tales From The Dream To The Throne: The Journey of Yusuf (AS). In this gem, Mufti Abdul Wahab shares the meaning of the word Qasas.
Hope you enjoy!
We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
So the root word is "qassa." In Arabic, we say "qasas" means story, right? But the root word "qassa" does not only mean story, it actually means to follow someone's footsteps.
Allah ﷻ mentions in Surah Qasas:
(Quran 28:11)
When Musa (AS) was being taken along the sea, his mother said to his sister, "Follow his trace, follow where he's going." So, "qasas" means to follow someone's footsteps. The reason why this is important is that when Allah ﷻ uses this word in the Quran, it means He will tell a story by sequence (chronologically). He will go step by step to allow us to appreciate the sequence. This only takes place two times in the Quran:
The story of Yusuf
(Quran 12:3)
The story of the people of the Cave (Surah Kahf)
(Quran 18:13)
There is benefit in understanding a story in a linear approach. There is also benefit in understanding a story without the sequence because whatever is needed at that time, you learn it. That's how Allah ﷻ reveals stories in the Quran, based upon the need of the Prophet ﷺ.
The Quran is not a storybook.
The Quran is not a book of science.
The Quran is not a book of facts and figures.
The Quran is a book of guidance.
May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to learn the Quran.
أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
