Assalamu Alaykum,
Today’s gem is from Shaykh Abdullah Waheed’s class, The Greatest Love Story: Zainab (R) and Abul Aas (R). In this gem, Shaykh Abdullah Waheed shares his favorite interpretation of Kawthar.
Hope you enjoy!
We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
The Quraysh would say about the Prophet ﷺ that he was cursed and he would never have sons.
In response to that Allah ﷻ said we give you kawthar.
Fakhr al-Din al-Razi says kawthar has twenty-one interpretations. I'm going to give you my favorite interpretation. The most common interpretation of Kawthar means the pond where the Prophet ﷺ will serve his community on the Day of Judgement - that's one interpretation.
Here’s the most intriguing interpretation in my opinion. The word Kawthar’s root word is kathura which means abundance. So, We are going to give you an abundance. Zamakhshari says abundance means followers. Basically saying, you don't have two sons, three sons, We're going to give you billions of sons. We're going to give you billions of followers and for that you need a very large pond.
May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to follow the Prophet ﷺ.
أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
