Assalamu Alaykum,

Today’s gem is from Mufti Aasim Rashid’s course, The End of an Era: the Martyrdom of Umar (R), Uthman (R), and Ali (R). In this gem, as Mufti Aasim shares the seemingly impossible dua that Umar (R) made for his death.

We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Umar (R) used to make this dua that Oh Allah, I ask to be a martyr, but I also ask to die in Medina.

Someone asked him how is this possible? To be a martyr means you have to go out into the battlefield, but you also want to die in Medina?

Umar (R) responded that if Allah ﷻ wants, He can make it happen.

Then one night Umar (R) saw a dream. In that dream, he sees a big red rooster pecking at him two or three times. He asks his daughter Hafsa (R) about the meaning of this dream.

She says it seems that you will be attacked by a non muslim and you will be stabbed two or three times.

This is exactly what ended up happening. Umar (R) was stabbed by a non muslim while right after starting Fajr salah.

May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to ask Allah for the best in this life and the next.
