Assalamu Alaykum,
Today’s gem is from Mufti Abdul Rahman Waheed’s Ramadan Immersion course, A Clear Victory: Tafsir of Surah Al-Fath. In this gem Mufti Abdul Rahman explains why Allah mentions morning and afternoon in Ayah 9 of Surah Fath (screenshot below).
(Quran 48:9)
Hope you enjoy!
We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
So you glorify Allah ﷻ day and night. بُكْرَةًۭ وَأَصِيلًا means morning and afternoon.
Over here its morning and afternoon, in other places Allah ﷻ mentions day and night. It's not to specify the timings, but there are two timings mentioned to generalize all day, all night.
There's one thing that you can do all day, all night, whether you're sitting, whether you're standing, whether you're in wudu, whether you're laying down. It's dhikr.
It's not against adab to lay down and do dhikr; it's against adab to lay down and read Quran. It's not against adab to stand up and do dhikr; it's against adab to stand up and eat food. It's not against adab to sit down without wudu and do dhikr of Allah ﷻ; but it's against adab to sit down and read Quran even if you don't touch it without wudu.
So dhikr is something Allah ﷻ has said to do in abundance:
(Quran 33:41)
Because the more you remember Him, the more you become conscious of Him. The more you become conscious of Him, the more you are encouraged to follow His commands and restrain yourself from breaking His commands. The more you say ﷺ, the more you have yearning to see Medina. The more salawat you say, the more you love the Prophet ﷺ.
It starts with the tongue, just saying it. Start with that. That's what Allah ﷻ is saying, start with that.
The Sahaba were doing dhikr day and night, day and night, day and night. And then hence Allah ﷻ blessed them. Allah ﷻ is saying now that Allah ﷻ has blessed you, keep doing it, don't forget that. Many times you forget how you got there. Allah's reminding them, don't forget how you got there.
May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to do dhikr in abundance.
أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
