Today we’re going through a gem from Mufti Abdul Rahman Waheed’s class on the tafsir of Surah Hadid about when Abdullah Ibn Mubarak Rahimuhullah was asked how he finds comfort in being alone. Hope you enjoy!

We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Abdullah ibn Mubarak Rahimuhullah, the famous Muhaddith, would travel for 6 months every year for the sake of Allah, and for 6 months he’d stay home. While he was at home for the most part he would keep to himself and be alone reading Quran and Hadith.

One person came to him and asked, “How do you find comfort in being alone?”

He replies, “I’m not alone, I’m always talking to Allah ﷻ and I’m constantly in the companionship of the Prophet ﷺ. “

Someone said to him, “Look man, that sounds kind of sketchy… You’re talking about talking to Allah, that’s fine. But you’re a tabi’i, the Prophet ﷺ isn’t here with us. How can you say you’re in his companionship?”

Abdullah Ibn Mubarak replied, “I speak to Allah ﷻ, and Allah ﷻ speaks to me through the Quran. I benefit from the companionship of the Prophet ﷺ from his Hadith. So even when I’m alone, I never feel lonely.”

As the poet says:

دیوانہ چمن کی سیریں نہیں ہیں تنہا
عالم ہے ان گلوں میں، پھولوں میں بستیاں ہیں

Deewane chaman ki serein nahin hain tanha
Aalam hay un gulon mein, phuloon mein bastiyan hain

Long walks in the garden are not lonely
There are worlds in these flowers, these flowers have communities in them

Another poet (Faiz Ahmed Faiz) says,

ہم اہل قفس تنہا بھی نہیں ہر روز نسیم صبح وطن
یادوں سے معطر آتی ہے اشکوں سے منور جاتی ہے

hum ahl-e-qafas tanha bhi nahin har roz nasim-e-subh-e-watan
yaadon se moattar aati hai ashkon se munawwar jati hai

We prisoners are not alone, every day
Is scented with memories and shines with tears

أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
