Assalamu Alaykum,

Today we’re going through a gem from Mufti Abdul Rahman Waheed’s Etiquettes of a Seeker course about a saying that the ‘Ulama have about attaining virtues.

We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

The ‘Ulama say:

الأدب وسيلة إلى كل فضيلة
Etiquette is the means of attaining all virtues

Whatever virtuous act you want to attain in your life, it starts with adab (etiquette). That’s the path. If you’re on the path of etiquettes/mannerisms, you will get there.

This is true for people that work as well. Nobody likes to work next to a colleague who doesn’t have basic mannerisms.

Imagine working with someone who:

• Doesn’t know there’s something called deodorant

• Doesn’t know there’s something called a toothbrush

• Doesn’t know there’s something called cologne

• Doesn’t know that there’s something called speak when it's your turn

Yeah… I can see the disgusted face you’re making just reading those things.

You naturally distance yourself from people like this, and you gravitate towards people who have good mannerisms even in normal day to day settings.

I’m like that even when it comes to sitting in people’s cars. I like to sit in cars that are neat and clean even if it's an old car. I would rather sit in a beater that you can tell the owner took the time to clean than a new car that’s dirty. It tells you about the owner’s personality.

Learning the etiquettes of whatever field you’re in is very important.

Some of the most watched YouTube channels like the charisma one, or how to speak and how to react. It's all in the Quran, Hadith, and these books. Learning etiquette will benefit you in every walk of life, not just for seeking sacred knowledge.

It’ll help you in your pursuit of knowledge in your universities and colleges, it’ll help you at work, it’ll help you with your family relationships.

May Allah grant us tawfiq to learn and put into practice good adab.
