Assalamu Alaykum,
Today we’re going through a gem from Imam Khalid Latif’s Course on the names of Allah. In this gem, Imam Khalid shares a reflection he had as he watched his wife care for their daughter after she had an accident and got hurt.
Hope you enjoy!
We begin in the Name of Allah ﷻ, the Most Merciful and Compassionate,
We ask that He ﷻ sends Peace and Blessings upon our noble and beloved
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ
Do I perceive and believe in a Divine entity that loves me more than my wife loves our child?
One that is more merciful to me.
One that wants what's best for me.
One that is not simply watching me, but watching over me in a way that is amplified exponentially in comparison to the way that my wife does this for our baby girl.
This is what you want to think about. That it's not just mercy in the context of justice or the aftermath of injustice or infractions of law or anything like this, but we're thinking about it contextually now - more merciful than a mother to her child. A mother who carries this life in her womb, the rahim, goes through all kinds of physical pain and burden, an act that is so difficult it's only called labor. Stays up into late hours of the night nursing, feeding, clothing, washing, bathing, providing care, and nurture in a way that is not even remembered by the child when it gets older.
And this is what is being compared now to the Rahma of Allah ﷻ. That Allah's Rahma for His creation is more than what that mother does for her child. That's what you want to think about when you are invoking Allah ﷻ as Ar-Rahman, Ar-Rahim.
What you are calling upon Him on, through these understandings given to us through these Divine names - it's not just, “I did something wrong, have mercy on me.” But understanding it at a base level in terms of softness, tenderness, compassion, love - these attributes are all embedded into this idea of Ar-Rahman. And when we call upon Him as Ar-Rahman you can now apply that to pretty much anything in your dua - Ya Rahman, Ya Rahim, Ya Arahumur Rahimin.
Not just in the aspect of I did wrong forgive me, but in every mode of our engagement of the Divine.
May Allah ﷻ grant us tawfiq to turn to Him.
أقول قولي هذا وأستغفر الله لي ولكم، فاستغفروه إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
